You’ve started your internship — amazing! Now it’s time to settle in, get stuck in, and make the most of the experience.
This page covers the key things to keep in mind while you’re undertaking your internship. For more detail, refer back to your Starter Pack, which you were sent via email.
First day tips
First impressions count — here’s how to start strong:
- Be on time — Whether remote or in-person, punctuality matters.
- Dress appropriately — Not sure what to wear? Ask your employer in advance or go smart on day one.
- Ask questions — No one expects you to know everything. Be curious!
- Sort the basics — Don’t be afraid to ask about lunch breaks, working hours, or how things run day-to-day.
- Meet your team — Say hi to everyone! If you’re remote, try setting up quick virtual intros.
- Set your objectives — Chat with your manager about what you want to achieve. If they’ve already set some, sit down and go through them together.
- Bring lunch/snacks — Until you know the area, it’s safer to pack food and avoid getting hangry!
Internship Expectations
Here’s what’s expected of you as an intern — nothing scary, just a few golden rules:
Be reliable
- Stick to your agreed working hours.
- Record your hours using the Hour Tracker we sent you — it helps you and your employer stay on the same page.
Communicate!
- Running late? Not feeling well? Let your employer know as early as possible — don’t just disappear.
- Struggling with workload, travel, or study balance? Talk to your manager — they may be able to adjust your schedule or offer support.
Be professional
- Be polite, friendly, and respectful to everyone.
- Stay engaged — avoid checking your phone or scrolling unless you're on a break.
- Use email and messages professionally (especially with clients or senior staff).
Stay curious
- Keep asking questions! It’s how you learn and show interest.
- Explore the organisation — ask to sit in on meetings, try tasks in different areas, and say yes to new challenges.
If something’s not right...
Internships don’t always go perfectly — and that’s okay. What matters is how you handle it.
- Thinking of leaving early? Don’t ghost! Speak to your employer first. You might be able to reduce your hours, pause during exams, or adapt the role.
- Not enjoying it? Take a step back and ask: Is there something specific that’s not working? Could a small change help?
- If you're still unsure, contact the ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø Internship Scheme team — we’re here to help.
Quick reminder: Pay and expenses
- You’re paid directly by your employer, so payroll and pay dates may vary.
- If your internship is with an internal ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø department, you will be employed through Campus Jobs.
- You’ll earn at least the National Living Wage.
Final tips to keep in mind
- Track your progress in your Internship Tracker — it’ll help you reflect and talk about your achievements later.
- Bring your whole self — your attitude and enthusiasm go a long way.
- Don’t put pressure on yourself to be perfect. This is a learning experience!
The ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø Internship Scheme team will be in touch with you throughout your internship to check in and make sure you’re doing okay. We love hearing about what you’re up to so please do spare a few minutes to let us know! Have a question? You can reach out to us anytime on ris@reading.ac.uk.
