Summary module description:

The module aims to enable students to read Ancient Greek authors with some fluency, and to develop a sound competence in grammar, syntax and vocabulary. In addition, students will gain practice in the analysis of the literary texts studied.

The module aims to enable students to read Ancient Greek authors with some fluency, and to develop a sound competence in grammar, syntax and vocabulary. In addition, students will gain practice in the analysis of the literary texts studied.Ìý


Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to:




  • translate longer unadapted passages from Ancient Greek authors;

  • gain a competent knowledge of all the important grammatical forms and structures of Ancient Greek;

  • analyse the content of the texts studied


Additional outcomes:

The module also encourages the development of skills in written communication and work in groupsÌý


Outline content:

The course meets for three hours each week. At least one hour per week will be devoted to review of grammar and syntax. Texts read may include Euripides, orators, Homer.Ìý


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The module is conducted in seminars encouraging participation by students in translation and discussion.Ìý
