Summary module description:

Aims:
This module aims to provide the student with the option of writing a 4000 word, thirty credit, research essay instead of the 20000 word dissertation, in order to obtain a Post-Graduate Diploma in Childrenô€€’s Literature instead of the MA in Childrenô€€’s Literature. This module aims to enable students to conceive and select an appropriate topic on which to write a research essay; to develop and utilize advanced research skills, and to apply where appropriate those acquired on other modules; to develop and apply analytical and interpretative skills and appropriate close critical approaches to their chosen research topic; and to produce a clearly written, coherently argued and well-presented research essay.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected students will be able to:

  • write a well conceived, clearly written, coherently and closely argued, and well-presented essay that demonstrates their ability to utilize and apply advanced research and analytical skills.

Additional outcomes:
This module will encourage students to formulate questions and recognise relevant problems and complexities, to examine and question their own assumptions and arguments, and to analyse arguments made by others in terms of their assumptions and claims.

Outline content:

The research essay will be written on a subject chosen by the student in consultation with the Programme Director and the essay supervisor, and subject to the approval of the Programme Director

One 4000 word piece of written work.

Formative assessment methods:
Students must produce a 4,000 word research essay on a topic of their own choice within the topic of children's literature. The specifc title will be determined by the student in consultation with their supervisor and the Programme Director.
