Summary module description:

This module aims to teach students some elements of the Latin language and give them skills to read Latin at an elementary level.

This module aims to teach students some elements of the Latin language and give them skills to read Latin at an elementary level.

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to:




  • translate simple passages of Latin at an elementary level;

  • understand and use -Ìýsignificant elements of Latin grammar and vocabulary.

  • translate very simple English sentences into Latin


Additional outcomes:
The module also encourages the development of skills useful for working in groups. In addition, students will be introduced to some aspects of ancient Latin literature and culture.

Outline content:

The course will proceed by instruction in grammar and practice in translation.Ìý The text used is Latin to GCSE Books 1 & 2 (Henry Cullen & John Taylor, Bloomsbury) We will aim to cover chapters 1-7.17, plus irregular verbs from 8.28 and 8.29..


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The course will be taught in four seminars each week. Students will be encouraged to participate in class activities and discussion.

One 45-minute in-class, unseen closed book translation test in week 7 of the Autumn term. This will contribute 10% of the overall mark.
