Overview

Module aims and purpose

This module develops expertise in Information design (such as data visualisation, animated infographics, diagrams and clear writing) through the design of complex graphic items, often with a topical societal theme. The practical project is integrated with and informed by lectures on the history and theory of this specialised, but ubiquitous, design discipline.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:

  1. Organise visual content: Create effective and engaging design solutions by demonstrating an understanding of how people process and react to graphic and typographic content.
  2. Challenge the obvious: Create, explore and analyse alternative solutions to solve practical design problems through a wide range of graphic styles, platforms and formats.
  3. Employ technologies appropriately: Select and harness traditional, current and emerging technologies and crafts.
  4. Create change: Combine design research and practice with an awareness of communities, society, markets and the environment to drive positive change for audiences, clients and the design community.
  5. Develop research-based approaches to design. Apply quantitative and qualitative, user-based, participatory, visual and ethnographic research methods.

Module content

The module integrates design practice, history, theory, and technology to explore past and current applications to develop a deeper understanding of ID-related genres and contexts of use.

We will set you a practical brief on a relevant topic and ask you to create professional design outcomes. You will evidence your design process and engagement with the topic through a reflective report.

Structure

Teaching and learning methods

The module will be delivered through a series of weekly feedback classes with tutors and supervised work in the studio, supported with lectures, seminars, and workshops. You will receive regular formative feedback in whole cohort, small group or one-to-one discussions, in which you will be expected to present and defend your work and comment on the work of peers.

Some practical work may be collaborative.

Study hours

At least 54 hours of scheduled teaching and learning activities will be delivered in person, with the remaining hours for scheduled and self-scheduled teaching and learning activities delivered either in person or online. You will receive further details about how these hours will be delivered before the start of the module.
