Overview

Module aims and purpose

This module represents a 2-3 week course in English Language and experiencing UK higher education. The module is designed for visiting students from universities where the language of instruction is not English. Students develop their intercultural and communication skills through the English language by taking part in collaborative cultural-based project work.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, it is expected that students will be able to:

  1. Use English with more confidence than on arrival.
  2. Modify communication skills during intercultural interactions.
  3. Differentiate cultural norms in the UK and home countries.

Module content

  • English Language sessions exploring topics on British culture.
  • Speaking confidently in English e.g. agreeing and disagreeing; giving opinions.
  • Cultural visits, with preparation and post-visit discussion.
  • A formative small-scale research project on a chosen cultural topic, combining questionnaire, data collection and presentation skills.

Structure

Teaching and learning methods

The module represents an intensive course of 2-3 weeks, as negotiated by the client.

Teaching sessions take place each morning, and afternoon sessions vary between guest speakers, workshops, half-day visits and free study time.

The module takes a task-based, contextualised approach which integrates development of cultural knowledge with basic research skills (collecting data and presenting), while promoting confident use of productive (mainly speaking) English communication skills.

At least 30 hours of scheduled teaching and learning activities will be delivered in person, with the remaining hours for scheduled and self-scheduled teaching and learning activities delivered either in person or online.
