All TEEP (Test of English for Educational Purposes) papers and speaking performances are double marked by standardised examiners to ensure fair and reliable results. Grades are expressed on a 0–9 scale, including half bands. There are individual grades for reading, listening and writing, as well as an overall grade.
As a general guide, the band system works as follows:
| TEEP bands | Learner profiles |
| 0 | no ability in English |
| 1.0–4.5 | some ability in English, but not enough for higher education in the UK |
| 5.0–6.0 | enough ability in English for some less linguistically demanding courses, or courses that include further English study (for example, some foundation courses) |
| 6.5–7.0 | the recommended minimum acceptable level for admission to higher education courses in the UK |
| 7.5 and above | acceptable for admission to higher education courses in the UK |
